Europe’s shift away from diesels has doubled demand for Toyota Motor Corp.’s gasoline-electric hybrid cars, The Nikkei reports.
In October, hybrids accounted for 45% of the 58,000 vehicles Toyota sold in Europe—twice the volume before Volkswagen AG’s diesel emission cheating scandal began two years go. Deliveries of Toyota’s hybrid C-HR small SUV/crossover and larger RAV4 SUV jumped 38% in October.
Toyota targets sales of more than 1 million vehicles in Europe by 2020. The company’s overall sales in Europe in January-November grew 14% to 673,000 units, according to trade group ACEA. The region’s overall passenger vehicle market expanded 4% over the same period.
Toyota had expected hybrids to reach 50% of its total sales in Europe by 2020. But The Nikkei says the goal may be reached sooner because European carmakers are just beginning to expand their lineups of hybrid-powered vehicles.
