Toyota Motor Corp. has begun developing an all-new “super sports car” with a high-output hybrid-electric powertrain.

The car is expected to be based on the GR Super Sport concept (pictured) that was unveiled earlier this year in Tokyo. Toyota says the production model will be available in the “near future,” likely after the next-generation Supra sports coupe’s 2019 launch. No other details were provided.

The GR Super Sport shares its hybrid system with Toyota’s TS050 LMP1 racecar. The setup teams a twin-turbo 2.4-liter V-6 engine with an electric motor in a package that generates a combined 986 hp.

The TS050, which races in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) circuit, will compete in its class at this weekend’s 24 hours of Le Mans endurance race. The GR Super Sport also will be displayed at the event.
