Toyota Motor Corp. took the wraps off the all-new Prius hybrid hatchback at a media event in Las Vegas Tuesday night.

The fourth-generation Prius, which is the first model built on Toyota's new global architecture, is 2.4 inches longer, 0.6 inches wider and about 1 inch lower than its predecessor. The wheelbase is unchanged.

The new model gets a retuned double wishbone suspension, and torsional rigidity is improved by 60%. The combination improves handling and responsiveness without sacrificing ride quality, according to Toyota.

Toyota didn't release performance numbers or offer any details about the upgraded hybrid system other than to say every internal component is new or substantially revised. The improvements yield a thermal efficiency of more than 40% touted as a world best and a "huge" boost in fuel economy, according to the carmaker.

Media reports estimate the new Prius will be about 10% more efficient than the outgoing model, which had a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency rating of 50 mpg. The increase is attributed to smaller and lighter hybrid components, more efficient batteries and an improved piston engine.

Styling changes include a lowered hood and roofline and a more angular silhouette. LED headlights help create a minimalist front appearance, while the rear combination lamps accentuate the lower rear spoiler and redesigned rear fender.

The interior features a wraparound dashboard with a wide instrument panel. Toyota says visibility and trim quality have been enhanced.

A next-generation safety system will be optional. It includes pre-collision braking, automated cruise control, lane departure warning and pedestrian avoidance technologies.

The new Prius is expected to go on sale early next year. An even more efficient "Eco" version will be launched later.
