Toyota Motor Corp. is preparing to recall about 79,000 of its 2016-2017 model fullsize Tundra pickup trucks in North and Central America to strengthen plastic steps built into the corners of the rear bumper. More than 90% of affected vehicles are in the U.S.
Toyota says the supports for the steps can suffer unnoticed damage if the corner of the bumper strikes an object. If the step is then used, pieces could break away.
The recall is scheduled to begin in mid-February. Toyota dealers will replace the plastic reinforcement brackets with new units made of steel, according to the company.
