Toyota Motor Corp. says India’s plan to restrict car sales to only electric vehicles by 2030 is “not practical, and it’s not the way forward,” the Economic Times reports.

Shekar Viswanathan, who heads Toyota’s venture in India, argues that the government should take a neutral approach to future vehicle technologies. He says doing so would improve India’s air quality but give consumers more flexibility in satisfying their mobility needs.

EVs make sense for drivers who have a fixed distance to travel each day, Viswanathan says, but they aren’t the best “immediate answer.” He contends that hybrid powertrains would be better for consumers with more flexible travel schedules. He adds that hydrogen-fueled fuel cell-powered vehicles might ultimately become the best option.

Viswanathan agrees the government should hike taxes on high-polluting vehicles, such as old diesels. But he says enabling carmakers to offer an array of propulsion options will deliver cleaner air while allowing consumers to make “logical choices.”
