Toyota Motor Corp. is disputing a tax and tariff bill of more than 11 million baht ($327 million) for Prius hybrid sedans made at its Gateway plant in the country, The Nikkei reports.
Thai authorities say Toyota owes additional taxes on some 20,000 Prius cars assembled locally between 2010 and 2012 from knock-down kits. The country treats cars made from such kits the same as preassembled imports because neither contains locally supplied components.
Toyota argues it is allowed to build the cars from kits under terms of a trade pact between Thailand and Japan, thus avoiding import duties. The Nikkei says a trial before Thailand's Central Tax Court is expected to begin at the end of August and is likely to drag on for two or three years.
