Navigation and mapping giant TomTom International BV has acquired Autonomos GmbH, a Berlin-based startup that specializes in software and services for autonomous vehicle systems. Financial terms weren’t disclosed.
Autonomos was formed in 2012 by computer science and artificial intelligence researchers who had worked on self-driving vehicles at the Free University of Berlin. The company develops autonomous driving software, 3D sensor technology and digital image processing tools. It has participated in test programs involving self-driving taxis and vehicles controlled by everything from a smartphone to a person’s brain waves and eye movements.
TomTom plans to integrate Autonomos’ technology into its own map-based products and real-time traffic and navigation software for autonomous driving applications. TomTom has charted more than 125,000 miles of roads in the U.S., France and Germany with high-definition maps that can precisely pinpoint a vehicle’s location within a road lane to help enable full autonomous capabilities.
