Tesla Inc. CEO Elon Musk says the company expects to build 400,000 electric cars this year, not the 500,000 he mentioned in a brief tweet last night.
In a correction, Musk says he meant to indicate that Tesla would achieve an annualized production rate of about 500,000 unit by year-end. Last year the company delivered 245,000 cars, more than half of them its high-volume Model 3 sedan.
Tesla says its production reached an annualized rate of about 350,000 units at the end of 2018. The company told analysts last month that it might need all year to reach a sustainable weekly output of 7,000 of Model 3s.
The company has said it expects to produce a combined 101,000 of its Model S sedan and Model X crossover vehicles in 2019.
