Tesla Targets 750-Mile Range by 2020
Tesla Motors Inc. expects to increase the driving range of its electric vehicles to about 620 miles within the next two years and extend that range 5%-10% per year thereafter to nearly 750 miles by the end of the decade.

Tesla Motors Inc. expects to increase the driving range of its electric vehicles to about 620 miles within the next two years and extend that range 5%-10% per year thereafter to nearly 750 miles by the end of the decade. Tesla's current Model S EV can travel about 300 miles between charges.
In a video interview with Denmark's Borsen newspaper, CEO Elon Musk says Tesla will "for sure" achieve a range of 1,000 km (621 miles) by 2017 and top 1,200 km (745 miles) by 2020. He didn't identify which Tesla models would achieve this threshold.
In addition, Musk says Tesla will have a fully autonomous vehicle ready within three years. But he doesn't expect governments to start allowing such vehicles on public roads until about 2020. Tesla currently is beta testing an autonomous steering function for highway driving that it plans to launch later this year.
The company's new Model X crossover EV will be publicly unveiled tomorrow. It joins the current Model S sedan. The smaller Model 3 sedan is due to launch in 2017.
