Tesla Motors Inc.'s Model S displaced the Nissan Leaf as the most popular electric vehicle or plug-in hybrid in the U.S. in January-March, according to IHS Automotive. Tesla reports only its global sales total, but IHS used registration data to estimate U.S. sales.
IHS counted 5,800 new Model S registrations in the U.S. during the first three months of the year. This easily outpaced the Leaf's first quarter tally of 4,100 units, which plunged 21% from the same period in 2014.
Tesla maintained the lead in the second quarter, according to Automotive News. The publication estimates Tesla's sales topped 10,200 units in the U.S. through the first six months of the year. Nissan sold some 9,800 Leafs during the period, down 23% year-over-year.
