Tesla Inc. has trimmed $3,000 off the base price of its Model X electric crossover vehicle, pointing to production efficiencies that bolstered the car’s gross margin.
The Model X now starts at $79,500 instead of $82,500. The most expensive version, called the P100D, costs $145,000 but offers greater range and the ability to scoot from zero to 60 mph in 2.9 seconds.
CEO Elon Musk says demand for the Model X and the company’s $69,500 Model S sedan have gone up rather than down since last month’s debut of Tesla’s lower priced Model 3 sedan. The Model 3 has a base price of $35,000, although the cheapest version available until autumn is a $44,000 iteration with greater range.
