Tesla Motors Inc. has posted nearly 1,700 job openings on its Web site for engineers, managers and product specialists as it prepares to transition into higher-volume production.
Tesla has lost $1.9 billion since 2007. Over the past five years the company’s workforce has multiplied by a factor of 15 to more than 14,000 people. The expansion came as the company launched its first home-grown electric car, the $76,000 Model S sport sedan.
Last spring the company debuted Tesla Energy, a business unit that is marketing stationary battery backup systems under the Powerwall brand for homes and small businesses.
In late September Tesla began limited deliveries of its second electric, the $132,000 Model X crossover. Next year it will add an $80,000 version of that vehicle. And in 2017 it intends to launch the $40,000 Model 3 compact electric sedan. A crossover variant of the Model 3 is expected a few years thereafter.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has said the company aims to achieve annual sales of 500,000 units by 2020.
