Chris Lattner, a longtime software expert at Apple Inc., is joining Tesla Motors Inc. to head the carmaker’s efforts to refine its controversial Autopilot self-driving system, Bloomberg News reports.
The news service says Lattner will succeed Sterling Anderson, who it says headed Tesla’s Autopilot program for the past year.
Most recently Lattner was a senior executive in Apple’s developer tools department. Bloomberg says he is credited with introducing Swift, an open-source programming language used by developers to write apps for the operating system used in iPhones and iPads.
Tesla is keen to enable Autopilot to provide truly automatic driving. The current system can operate the company’s electric cars automatically under certain conditions. But it requires the driver to be ready to take control at any moment. A fatal crash last year involving a Tesla car operating in Autopilot mode drew attention to the limitations of the system.
