PSA Peugeot Citroen is in talks with Tata Motors Ltd. about a long-term partnership that could include engine and platform sharing, according to India's Economic Times.

ET says the French company's interest reflects a desire to return to the Indian car market after a 15-year hiatus.

The newspaper says PSA CEO Carlos Tavares wants to have the company's Indian strategy set by the end of this year. The company says there has been no decision regarding "a swift return to India."

An alliance might result in Tata making and distributing FCA vehicles in India and could lead to a shared vehicle platform for future Tata models, according to ET. The newspaper says the plan may involve assembling the Peugeot 208 hatchback, 308 sedan and 2008 mini crossover at Tata's factory at Sanand. The facility, which makes the Tata Nano minicar, has ample capacity.

The talks also include the possibility of PSA sharing its 2.0-liter DW10 diesel engine with Tata's Jaguar Land Rover unit, according to ET.
