Shanghai is considering several measures, including a tax on vehicles driven in the city, to reduce traffic congestion and help improve the city's air quality, Bloomberg News reports.
The Shanghai Municipal Transport and Port Authority tells reporters "vehicles are a big reason" for the increase in harmful airborne particulates. The agency also vows to "strongly control" gross-polluting vehicles.
If the measures are adopted, Shanghai would become China's first city to impose a tax specifically to control vehicle traffic levels. Bloomberg notes that London and Singapore levy fees on drivers who enter the city during peak traffic periods.
