California-based Samsung SDI Co. Ltd. plans to open a $63 million battery plant outside Detroit.
The facility in Auburn Hills—the company’s first high-volume factory for automotive lithium-ion batteries—is expected to employ nearly 500 people by 2023. The company did not disclose the new plant’s capacity or intended customers.
The factory, which also will serve as a product development center, will make rechargeable batteries for automotive, energy storage and information technology markets. Last January Samsung SDI unveiled a fast-charging, high-capacity battery material for electric cars at the Detroit auto show.
The company already has a production staff of 130 people in Auburn Hills that works on stationary battery storage systems, according to its website.
