SAIC Motor Corp. has opened a 10 billion-baht ($310 million) assembly plant outside Bangkok through a joint venture with Thai conglomerate Charoen Pokphand Group.
The venture, SAIC Motor-CP, has the capacity to make 100,000 MG-brand small cars per year, The Nikkei reports. SAIC acquired the iconic MG British brand in 2007.
Shi Guoyong, president of the new company, says the partnership aims to make Thailand a production hub for right-hand-drive MG cars for the Thai market and elsewhere in southeast Asia.
The new factory is the first of its kind by any large Chinese carmaker. SAIC had been assembling MGs at a temporary facility with annual capacity to make 10,000 units. That’s about how many MGs SAIC sold in Thailand through the first 10 months of 2017, according to The Nikkei.
