South Korea’s transport ministry, citing dozens of fires this year, is urging municipalities to order certain BMW cars off the road immediately until they have undergone an emergency inspection.
Some 39 BMW vehicles, almost all of them diesels, have caught fire in Korea since January. Most of the widely publicized fires have occurred in the past several weeks., and almost all involve diesel engines.
BMW blames a faulty exhaust gas recirculation device. The company has recalled 106,300 diesels in Korea and another 324,000 in Europe to remedy the flaw.
Korea’s transport ministry lacks the power to force affected cars off the road. But The Korea Herald says cities can do so if the vehicles pose a threat to public safety.
