Ricardo plc says it has begun testing a monitoring system in the U.K. that can measure the tailpipe emissions of vehicles as they pass.
Installed at select locations designated as Clean Air and Low-Emission Zones, the measurement system records real-world levels of ammonia, carbon dioxide, hydrocarbons, oxides of nitrogen and particulate matter from passing vehicles, according to Ricardo.
Camera-based sensors with plate recognition technology are used to categorize model type, aggregate data and identify non-complying vehicles.
Ricardo’s Energy & Environment unit is partnering with Opus Inspection Inc., an East Granby, Conn-based vehicle inspection company, on the program.
