Report: Ford Job Cuts in China Will Reach at Least 2,000

Ford Motor Co.’s joint venture with China’s Changan Automobile Group is eliminating 2,000 jobs, or about 10% of its workforce, sources tell The Nikkei.
Earlier this week The New York Times reported that the venture was phasing out contract worker agreements with several agencies. But it didn’t indicate exactly how many people would be affected.
Most of the cuts will occur at Changan Ford’s main factory in Chongqing, according to The Nikkei. The newspaper notes that the venture began last year to trim its staff there and will continue to do so over several more months.
If sales don’t revive, the cuts could double to 4,000 workers, the newspaper says. Changan Ford’s sales in China plunged 37% to 750,000 vehicles last year.
