Report: BMW Plans 5 Series Addition to Hybrid Lineup

BMW AG will introduce a plug-in hybrid variant of its 5 Series sedan in 2018, according toAutoBild. BMW confirms only that its product plans are undecided.
The German enthusiast magazine reported last month the model, to be called the i5, will be based on the stretched-wheelbase 5 Series sold in China. The car will join BMW's i3 electric city car and i8 hybrid supercar in the company's "i" sub-brand.
The new hybrid will combine design elements from BMW's 7 Series large sedan and 6 Series Gran Coupe, according to AutoBild. It says the car's powertrain will include a 218-hp piston engine driving the rear wheels, plus a 150-hp electric motor in front and a 272-hp motor in back. The car reportedly will be able to travel about 75 miles (125 km) in electric-only mode.
BMW is targeting the i5 primarily for Chinese and American markets, the magazine says. It predicts a retail price of about €100,000 ($107,700) and annual sales of 30,000 units.
