South Korea’s Renault Samsung Motors Co. is fighting sagging sales and continuing labor strife, the Korea Herald reports.
Domestic sales through August fell 18% to 55,600 units, making it unlikely that the company will reach its full-year target of 100,000 vehicles. The company hopes to export about 170,000 cars and vans in 2018.
Renault Samsung is the smallest of Korea’s five carmakers in terms of sales. Demand for the company’s SM6 sedan plummeted 46% to just 16,000 units in January-August, according to the newspaper. It notes that the Renault Clio supermini introduced in Korea five months ago has fallen short of sales expectations. The company hopes for better luck with the Renault Master commercial van being introduced this month.
Renault Samsung is the only Korean carmaker that has not yet settled on a new contract with its labor union, the Herald says. Critics tell the newspaper that carmaker also has generated more complaints about quality and safety issues than its competitors.
