Renault-Nissan Automotive India Pvt. Ltd.’s assembly plant in Oragadam is permanently eliminating third-shift production, sources tell The Times of India.

The newspaper cites one official who says the cutback will initially trim 800 temporary jobs but could balloon to nearly 2,000 workers if output continues to outpace demand. Renault Nissan Automotive India insists that all fulltime employees will keep their jobs.

The factory makes Datsun redi-Go and Renault Kwid mini-hatchbacks. But inventories have grown to more than 20,000 units since the government announced last month that it would not recognize 500 and 1,000-rupee notes after December.

Those notes, which represent 85% of the value of paper currency presently in circulation, are being replaced with 2,000-rupee ($30) notes. But until the transition is completed several months from now, India is struggling with a massive currency shortage that has disrupted consumer spending habits.
