Renault SA has joined the recently formed E-Via Flex-E consortium that aims to open a network of fast-charging stations for electric vehicles across southern Europe.
Announced in December, the group plans to open 14 “high-power-charging” stations in France, Italy and Spain by the end of the year. The stations will have a charging capacity as high as 350 kW.
Renault alliance partner Nissan Motor Co. also is a member of the group, along with several energy companies. The project is part of the European Commission’s Connecting Europe Facility for Transport program, which will fund half of the group’s €6.9 million ($8.5 million) budget.
Renault also is part of the Ultra-E—along with Audi, BMW and Magna—and High-Speed Electric Mobility Across Europe networks in northern Europe, which operate 25 and 158 charging stations, respectively.
Several other European groups are working on their own EV charger initiatives, such as Ionity, FastCharge and Mega-E. Ionity, which is backed by BMW, Mercedes, Ford and Volkswagen, plans to open 400 stations by 2020.
