Jaguar Land Rover Ltd. is launching a new inline-six engine and Land Rover’s first mild-hybrid system in the HST performance variant of its Range Rover Sport SUV.

The 3.0-liter flat-six (right) is 20% more fuel efficient and provides greater performance and refinement than the outgoing V-6, according to the carmaker. A gasoline particulate filter promises to cut particulate emissions by as much as 75%.

Teaming an electric supercharger and a twin-scroll turbocharger, the engine generates 395 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. Performance is enhanced with continuous variable valve lift.

The 48-volt mild-hybrid system uses a small electric motor to capture and store energy otherwise lost through braking. JLR says the design also improves the efficiency of the automatic stop-start system.

The upcoming Evoque crossover vehicle also will offer the mild-hybrid technology. JLR will build the new inline-six engine alongside current gasoline and diesel 4-cylinder engines at the company’s plant in Wolverhampton, England.
