PSA Peugeot Citroen says it will begin next spring to publicize actual on-the-road fuel economy readings for its cars. The company also plans in early 2017 to publicize real-world oxides of nitrogen emissions for its diesels.
Both measures have come under renewed scrutiny following Volkswagen AG’s admission that millions of its cars cheated on tests for both pollutants.
PSA is partnering on the program with the Brussels-based European Federation for Transport & Environment. T&E and other groups have long criticized Europe’s current emission tests as being too easily manipulated into giving results that don’t reflect on-the-road performance.
PSA will tout numbers derived from a new test procedure co-developed with T&E. The evaluations will measure actual carbon dioxide and NOx emissions from the company’s main models as they complete a test route near Paris that includes city, suburban and highway driving sections. Results will be vetted by an unspecified independent third party.
