PSA to Ask French Unions for More Job Cuts

PSA Peugeot Citroen CEO Philippe Varin says the company will propose another round jobs reductions in France to help align capacity with sales.
The company has trimmed production at several French factories and will close its Aulnay plant outside Paris by the end of October. PSA is trying to offset a €576 million operating loss in 2012, in part by reducing its workforce in France 17% by the end of next year.
Varin tells reporters at the Frankfurt auto show that PSA facilities most likely to be cut back are those still operating two assembly lines. That list includes plants in Mulhouse, Poissy and Sochaux.
Varin says any new cuts will be made after talks with unions. One of them, the moderate CFTC, tells Reuters that no such negotiations have begun.
