Porsche Plans Aluminum Body for Next-Generation Panamera

Porsche AG is developing an aluminum body and new array of engines for the redesigned Panamera sedan due two years from now, Autocar reports.

Chief designer Michael Mauer has promised the new car will "look better" than the current model, with a sportier profile and smoother rear roofline. Extensive use of aluminum will help maintain the car's current weight in spite of additional standard equipment.

The next-generation Panamera will ride on Volkswagen AG's new MSB (modular standard platform) rear drive/all-wheel drive architecture. The chassis was developed to carry all the VW Group's upcoming midship and rear-engine cars, including the Bentley Continental super-luxury car.

The Panamera will have a slightly longer wheelbase and slightly shorter front and rear overhangs, according Autocar. The British enthusiast magazine says Porsche is readying a new family of V-6 and V-8 gasoline engines and a modified version of the current Panamera's Audi-supplied diesel for the car.
