Porsche AG is increasing the number of people it plans to hire to develop and produce its upcoming electric sports car from about 1,000 to more than 1,400.

The focus of the new hires will be on experts in connectivity, digitalization, e-mobility and what Porsche describes as smart mobility. In addition, the company plans to add 100 information technology specialists, 50 digital experts and more apprentices.

The bulk of the new positions—about 1,200—will be added at the company's main operations in Zuffenhausen, Germany. Porsche is investing about €1 billion ($1.1 billion) there to launch the Mission E electric sedan by the end of the decade.

Porsche unveiled a concept version of the stylish Mission E, which features two electric motors and a lithium-ion battery pack, last September at the Frankfurt auto show. The EV generates about 590 hp and can zip from zero to 62 mph in less than 3.5 seconds, according to the carmaker. The car’s driving range is estimated to be about 310 miles on the European driving cycle.
