Porsche Affirms New Diesel Models
Porsche AG discounts reports that it is phasing out diesels in its lineup.
Porsche AG discounts reports that it is phasing out diesels in its lineup. But the company also sees a stronger future for hybrid powertrains.
Sales chief Detlev von Platen tells Automotive News Europe that Porsche plans for a diesel model of its redesigned Cayenne large SUV and perhaps for the smaller Macan crossover too. He adds that a diesel’s superior torque and fuel economy “makes sense” in an SUV.
But Von Platen also dismisses diesels as “never extremely relevant” to the Porsche brand. The option was introduced in 2009 and currently accounts for only 14% of global sales. Porsche uses diesel engines developed and built by Audi AG, a sister brand in the Volkswagen Group.
Von Platen anticipates strong demand for its next-generation plug-in hybrid powertrain. The new system provides an electric-only driving range of 50 km (31 miles), nearly 40% greater than the previous version.
