London-based Parkopedia Ltd. plans to form a joint venture with China’s Zhitu Map to expand its parking locator business in China.
The partnership will team Parkopedia’s parking app platform with Zhitu's surveying and mapping expertise. As with Parkopedia’s service in other countries, the service in China will help drivers find, compare, reserve and pay for available parking spots from participating providers.
The joint venture is expected to launch later this year and will be based in Yangzhou. Parkopedia opened an office in Shanghai in 2014.
Zhitu aims to use “big-data” analytics to help improve urban mobility. The company says it is developing several “smart” city-type applications.
Formed in 2007, Parkopedia claims to be the world’s largest parking service provider with information about 60 million parking spaces in 8,000 cities. The company’s customer list includes Apple, BMW, Ford, Garmin, General Motors, Jaguar Land Rover, Mazda, Peugeot, TomTom, Toyota and Volvo.
