General Motors Co.’s Opel unit promises its first all-electric car, the Ampera-e, will offer acceleration akin to the brand’s piston-powered performance models.
The Ampera-e is Opel’s version of the Chevrolet Bolt EV that GM plans to introduce in the U.S. next year. Both five-door hatchbacks are expected to be produced at GM’s Orion factory outside Detroit.
GM has not announced an official price for either model. But it has indicated previously that the Bolt will retail in the U.S. for about $37,500—or $30,000 after a federal tax credit.
Opel says the Ampera-e’s powertrain will produce 204 hp and an impressive 266 lb-ft of torque, suggesting very similar numbers for the Bolt. Both cars will use a 60-kWh lithium-ion battery array packaged under the floor that is widely expected to provide a driving range in excess of 200 miles.
