PSA Group’s Opel unit has suspended a 3-month-old buyout program over fears that too many of its engineers are using it to take jobs elsewhere.
Opel tells Reuters that the voluntary program has been halted pending a meeting between management and the company’s works council at the end of May.
PSA wants to trim 3,700 Opel staff jobs in Germany by 2020 to cut costs. But the works council says the buyout plan is causing a loss of critical talent. The company denies the claim, asserting that all key positions remain filled and functional.
Reuters cites an internal memo that dismisses fears of a mass exodus of crucial expertise are “an old wives’ tale.” The memo, distributed in April, says the voluntary program has attracted about 1,000 applications, representing 5% of its staff in Germany.
