Consumers in Japan who buy a Nissan Leaf electric vehicle can now bank and carbon dioxide credits they gain by operating their vehicles.
The system, called the Nissan Zero Emission Fund, automatically tracks annual travel by a participant's Leaf via an onboard communications link to the company's Carwings Data Center.
The fund calculates and receives CO2 credits awarded by Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. It then sells those credits to the Green Investment Promotion Organization, a group that promotes investment in low-carbon-emission technology.
Nissan says revenue from the sales will be used to help fund construction of quick-charge facilities and pay for forest conservation projects.
