Nissan Motor Co. is preparing to recall more than 47,000 Leaf electric sedans in the U.S. and Canada to repair a brake booster relay that could freeze after being parked in extremely cold weather.
The problem in certain 2013-2015 model Leafs could disable the brake booster, thereby requiring the driver to exert more pressure on the brake pedal to slow the vehicle. Nissan says a frozen relay would cause the brake warning lamp to illuminate immediately upon engine startup.
Nissan began fixing the problem in Leafs in Canada and the U.S. last October under a voluntary service campaign. It agreed in February to launch a mandatory recall in both countries at the request of Transport Canada.
Nissan hasn’t said when the callbacks will begin. The company plans to have dealers reprogram the system’s electrically driven brake controller.
