Nissan Motor Co. is developing a range-extended hybrid vehicle. The yet-to-be-named model is expected to be unveiled next year.
Yoshi Shimoida, Nissan’s deputy general manager for hybrids and electric vehicles, describes the vehicle as a series hybrid similar to the Chevrolet Volt and BMW i3 REx models. Those vehicles use a small combustion engine and generator to supplement a lithium-ion battery pack—the main power source—and extend driving range.
Nissan's extended-range hybrid will be an all-new model rather than one based on the company’s Leaf compact EV, Shimoida tells Australia’s Motoring magazine. No other details were provided.
The tiny i3 REx hybrid has an overall range of 186 miles, double that of the base i3 EV.
The second-generation Volt, which teams an 18.4-kWh lithium-ion battery with a 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine, can travel more than 50 miles on electric power and as far as 420 miles overall on a single trip. Owners who recharge the battery after short trips can travel more than 1,000 miles before having to refuel the gasoline engine
