Nissan Motor Co. has officially opened an advanced research center in Sunnyvale, Calif., to develop technologies for connected and autonomous vehicles.

The 25,000-sq-ft facility and its eventual staff of 60 engineers and researchers will coordinate R&D work with the Nissan Research Center in Japan. The new research center also will absorb work by Nissan and alliance partner Renault SA at a smaller facility set up two years ago in nearby Mountain View.

Nissan says the Sunnyvale facility also will conduct research on human machine interface issues as they related to self-driving.
