Nissan Motor Co. has introduced an updated version of its Leaf electric sedan in Japan, including a new model priced $5,000 below the standard $45,900 car.
All versions of the Leaf now feature a zippier motor and an integrated power system that is 30% smaller and 10% lighter than the one in the original Leaf. Nissan says the updated car shed about 175 lbs, added about one cubic foot of luggage space and gained more responsive acceleration.
Upgrades for higher-line models include LED headlamps with auto-leveling, fog lights, new body colors, a lighter-weight Bose audio system, leather seats, Nissan's surround-view video parking aid and more efficient heating and regenerative braking systems.
Nissan has not indicated if the lower-priced Leaf model will be offered in the U.S.
