Nissan Confirms U.K. Production for Next-Gen SUVs

Nissan Motor Co. says the next-generation version of its Qashqai small SUV/crossover and X-Trail midsize variant will be produced at the company’s giant assembly plant in Sunderland, England.
The facility currently makes the Qashqai as well as the Juke crossover, Leaf electric sedan, Note small car and Infiniti small sport sedan. About 80% of the factory’s output is exported, primarily to Europe.
Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn said last month he might move the factory’s output to the European continent. He indicated a decision to stay would hinge on a government guarantee of compensation if the U.K.’s decision to exit the European Union causes tariffs to rise on exported models.
Ghosn retracted his threat last week after meeting with British Prime Minister Theresa May. He declared himself confident that the British government would “ensure that the Sunderland plant remains competitive.”
The complex employs 7,000 people and builds some 500,000 vehicles annually. The facility accounts for one-third of the U.K.’s automotive output.
