The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is demanding that Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV defend its handling of 20 recent recalls covering 10.1 million vehicles.
NHTSA Administrator Mark Rosekind declares "significant questions" have been raised about the speed and efficiency with which FCA has executed the recalls. The agency also cites consumer complaints about lack of notification, a shortage of replacement parts, difficulty scheduling repair work and "misinformation" from dealers.
The agency will grill FCA during a July 2 public hearing about recalls the company conducted in 2013-2015. The campaigns range in size from 2.9 million (Takata airbag inflators in 12 models) to 1,500 (door latches in Dodge Viper sports cars). The callbacks involve powertrain and suspension flaws, electrical problems, airbag defects and fuel system leaks.
NHTSA has issued an 11-page special order requiring FCA to report details by June 1 about its recall performance. The company faces fines of $7,000 per day to a maximum $35 million for failing to comply.
