The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened an investigation into nine complaints that Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs sometimes brake by themselves.
The probe targets the adaptive cruise control feature in about 20,000 vehicles produced during the 2014 model year. Such systems use cameras and other sensors to detect objects and automatically decelerate the vehicle if necessary to avoid a collision.
NHTSA says the complaints it has received report cases where Grand Cherokees slowed suddenly when there were no threats ahead and apparently when the cruise control system was not turned on. The complaints report multiple such events under varying road conditions and locations.
