Confirming previous reports, Volkswagen AG says it will offer a mild-hybrid power system in the redesigned Golf small car due next year.

The architecture will team turbocharged combustion engines and a 12-volt battery with an integrated belt-driven starter/generator and a 48-volt lithium-ion battery.

VW says the Golf’s mild-hybrid system (pictured) will enable automatic stop-start functionality and regenerative braking. The system also provides an electric boost during acceleration to help minimize low-speed turbo lag, and it turns the engine off during highway coasting.

Researchers Evercore ISI predict that 55% of new cars sold in Europe by 2025 will be equipped with 48-volt mild hybrid systems. Several carmakers already offer the technology, including VW Group’s Audi unit.

VW says it will “gradually electrify” almost every vehicle in its lineup in coming years. The brand’s first full-electric models, the I.D. Crozz crossover vehicle and Buzz microbus, are due in 2020.
