BMW AG’s next-generation 3 Series compact car will include an all-electric version dubbed the eDrive Sport, reports AutoExpress.
The U.K.-based enthusiast magazine, which doesn’t cite its sources, says the electric drivetrain will be launched around 2020—about two years after the next-generation 3 Series is introduced. The EV will feature a 90-kWh lithium-ion battery pack with a driving range of about 300 miles, according to the report.
At launch, the new 3 Series will include at least one plug-in hybrid model that will team a 2.0-liter engine with an 87-hp electric motor, AutoExpress says. The current 3 Series will get its first plug-in system later this year with a similar engine and motor. But the next-generation plug-in is expected to feature a larger battery and extended driving range.
The new 3 Series will be built on BMW’s Cluster Architecture with a slightly longer wheelbase than today’s model. The company says the chassis’ blend of aluminum, carbon fiber and high-strength steel saves about 176 lbs.
