Tata Motors Ltd. confirms it will introduce a diesel option for its ultra-low-price Nano sedan.
The company may unveil the engine next month at the India auto show in New Delhi. Some media reports say the Nano also will add a hatchback model.
Tata has revealed no details about the new diesel. But media reports predict the mill will have two cylinders, displace 800 cc, make 45 hp and deliver the equivalent of 80 mpg or more on the U.S. city/highway driving.
The car's current 624-cc 2-cylinder gasoline engine makes 38 hp and gets about 60 mpg. The Nano also offers a 33-hp bi-fuel variant of that engine that can burn gasoline or compressed natural gas.
Some reports say Tata will replace that engine with a 100-hp unit in the sedan and introduce a 1.2-liter turbocharged gasoline engine and 1.3-liter Fiat-sourced diesel for the hatchback.
