The U.S. Congress should quickly ratify the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement to avoid disrupting the North American auto industry, the country’s car dealer group says.
Charlie Gilchrist, chairman of the National Automobile Dealers Assn., tells the Automotive Press Assn. in Detroit that the measure will maintain local production and sales, protect vehicle retail jobs, bolster the competitiveness of the American auto industry and remove the threat of tariffs on cars and components.
USMCA was signed a year ago as an update to the 25-year-old North American Free Trade Agreement. Only Mexico has formally ratified the pact to date.
Canada has begun the approval process. NADA’s CEO tells Automotive News that enabling legislation to do the same in Congress could be put to a vote in the U.S. House of Representatives in about six weeks.
