Elon Musk’s Boring Co. plans to open a two-mile-long test tunnel for its high-speed underground shuttle service near Los Angeles this year.
In a Twitter post last night, Musk says he plans to hold a grand opening event Dec. 10 and offer free public rides the next day.
The initial tunnel will service Musk’s SpaceX’s headquarters in Hawthorne, Calif. Musk says the system will be capable of transporting 16 passengers or one car at a time The service will use an autonomously driven “skate” platform that travels on magnetic rails at speeds as high as 155 mph.
Boring previously has said it will begin digging a tunnel from Los Angeles to San Francisco next year. The company also has started work on a tunnel in Washington, D.C., with plans for an east coast network that runs through New York City and Boston.
In July, Boring won a contract to build an underground train that connects downtown Chicago with the city’s O’Hare airport. That project is due to be completed in 2022.
