Mitsubishi Motors Corp. has agreed to compensate customers in Japan whose minicars were given inflated fuel economy ratings.
The program will pay for extra fuel costs and higher government taxes on about 625,000 vehicles that no longer qualify for discounts, according to The Nikkei. Details are expected to be announced in June.
The offer will cover owners of Mitsubishi eK minivans and eK Space minicars and Nissan Dayz and Dayz Roox minivans. MMC produces all four models.
Mitsubishi admitted nearly three weeks ago to manipulating tests to increase the fuel efficiency ratings of the vehicles. The amount it pays per model will depend on the fuel efficiency shortfall calculated by Japan’s transport ministry. The Nikkei says those tests aren’t likely to be completed until next month.
