Mitsubishi Motors Corp. plans to reduce production at its Mizushima assembly plant in Japan by about 40% to 350,000 vehicles this year, The Nikkei reports, without citing sources.
The company intends to consolidate four lines at the Mizushima factory in Okayama Prefecture into two this year, according to the Tokyo-based newspaper. The facility's output includes the eK Wagon minivehicle and Galant Fortis compact sedan for domestic and European markets.
The consolidation in Okayama will shrink the combined annual output at MMC's three domestic assembly facilities 26% to 700,000 vehicles this year, The Nikkei says. As a result, the company's capacity utilization in Japan will rise to about 70% from less than 50% in the fiscal year ended March 31.
Until now, MMC has made its production cuts outside Japan. It ended manufacturing operations in Australia in 2008 and in Europe last year. But sluggish demand in Europe and Japan left the company's Mizushima factory operating at less than 40% of capacity in the 2012-2013 fiscal year, according to the newspaper.
