Backups at the Mexican border to the U.S. slashed the flow of northbound trucks by half last week, Reuters reports.
The delays are a result of the Trump administration’s decision to reassign about 750 border agents to help process the surge in families from Central America who are seeking asylum in the U.S.
The head of the Mexican Auto Industry Assn. tells Reuters that the unprecedented backup risks disrupting parts and assembly plants in the U.S. He estimates 7,500 truck trailers failed to make the border crossing last week because of the delays.
Yesterday, trucks began lining up in Mexico at the border crossing to El Paso 17 hours before the facility opened, according to Reuters.
