A fire threat caused by a defective electrical device intended to prevent short-circuit damage has prompted Daimler AG to recall 1 million of its 2015-2017 model sedans and crossovers. The company says about 354,400 of the affected vehicles are in the U.S.
The campaign will target certain CLA compact cars, C-Class midsize cars, E-Class large cars and GLC compact crossovers. Mercedes reports 51 fires—30 of them in the U.S.—but no injuries caused by the defective component in the engine starter system.
Daimler says overheating and fire could result if the engine or transmission is damaged, and the driver then makes repeated attempts to start the vehicle.
Dealers will fix the problem by installing an additional fuse in the starter system. Daimler expects to begin notifying affected U.S. customers later this month.
